It had been a month since Dominic had been Minister. He couldn't believe how fast yet slow the time had passed. Small attacks here and there, murders and such were becoming more frequent as the dark side started playing up, showing the people what they were made of. Dominic hadn't even been able to think about trying to stop them as he sorted out the Ministry and dealt with Kingsley's assassination. He saw at least 50 different people each day, signed hundreds of papers and used more ink than he could imagine.
It seemed the work load wasn't slowing at all and he was getting no where with the war which was about to break out. That thought infuriated him. This wasn't a time for petty paperwork. This was a time for action, to try get rid of the Death Eaters before they rose and started causing havoc. Of course he couldn't just do that. He may be the Minister but there were laws and regulations. The spy in him wanted to just go out and murder Liam but he couldn't. It was now the middle of the night and he was at breaking points. He was trying to finish writing a letter. He went to put more ink on his quill when the pot fell over his whole letter.
It was the tipping point he needed and he stood from his desk letting out a frustrated yell as he picked up the ink pot and flew it across the room. It shattered against the wall and ink splattered everywhere. He stood, his shoulders rising and falling fast with his heavy breathing. He let out a snarl and kicked his chair over, feeling like a child throwing a tantrum. He stood there, his eyes shut and his hands in his hair as all his anger radiated off him. He was glad he was alone. Well, he had thought he was until the he heard the door opened. He spun to face the person walking in, his eyes narrow and harsh.

It was strange, being back at work without Kinglsey being there. It made her heart feel empty. It made her workplace seem deserted. She sat at her desk for hours, sending people in to meet Dominic and staring at the photo of her and Kingsley. It broke her heart to think that she had lost him, it had been too soon. Why had they been forced to say good-bye so soon? It didn’t help that Dominic had all but cast her aside. It had broken her heart and she had gone straight to Arlyn, crying to him in his drunken state and just asking him to hold her. Onyx didn’t know that she could hold so many tears in her body, but she had wept clear through the night until she had fallen asleep at his side. It was strange, working under the eye of Dominic Masters. For so long he had been her best friend and now he was just her boss. They were nothing more, nothing less. He hated her. She knew it, he hated her because she had done something to him. Because for some reason she was the cause of Kingsley’s death. The thought broke her heart and made her want to cry all over again. Her eyes glanced at the clock and then glanced at Dominic’s door to his office. She should have been gone hours ago, it was way past her work hours but she couldn’t bring herself to leave Dominic alone. Not with the way he was stressing out lately. She wanted to make it better, to take his stress away, but there was no way he would let her near him. When she heard things begin to crash in the office, Onyx walked to the door, pressing her ear against the wood. Dominic was frustrated. He had finally lost it. The blonde rested her hand on the knob before she turned it, opening the door and slipping inside quietly. His back was facing her until he turned, glaring at her. At his gaze, her eyes cast down at the ground. Why did she love him so much? ”Are you alright, M’sieur?” It must have been strange to him, to have Onyx not call him by his name. Then again, he probably didn’t care. He would never care. Why couldn’t she just move on from him? Why?

Dominic stood, his shoulders moving and his hands in fists as his eyes met Onyx's. Typical. Why was she still here? She would be here. of course she was. Onyx was always where she shouldn't be. She still didn't know about him being a spy. She didn't know why he had been dangerous, why he had enemies. Now of course it didn't matter. She stood there, in her beautiful glory. Her veela not having an affect on him since he'd spent all his childhood staring at it. He felt his insides twist in a horrible way but he was use to it. It happened every time he saw her and since she sat right outside his office every day it was often.
She asked if he was okay which was nice, caring. Though she didn't use his name. She was formal again. She called him M'siuer, just like she did to Kingsley. It was formal, and it didn't hold the warmth it had when she had said it to Kingsley. It was different. She had spoken to him in a loving way. Now it was only business. He couldn't blame her, that was what he wanted. That was how he'd been treating her. He wanted this and he couldn't cave now that she was finally just treating him like anyone else.
She had dropped eye contact at his glare so he could stare at her all he wanted. His face softened because he wasn't angry at her. He rolled his shoulders and flexed his fingers to calm his body. He should be behaving better, especially in front of Onyx. He didn't want her thinking he couldn't handle this. If she told someone like Donovan it might wreck things.
"I'm sorry you had to hear that. I'm fine. You shouldn't still be here. Go home, it's long past your time to leave." He said as he picked up his wand and muttered spells to fix the mess he had made. The ink pulled itself off all it had fallen on and the ink pot fixed itself, so the ink could fill it once more. It floated back to his desk. He lent down and picked up the chair. "Why are you still here?" He asked. There was no work she had to do, none urgent enough for her to be here at this hour.

Onyx looked around at the mess inside of the office. Whatever had gotten him frustrated had really thrown him over the edge. She began to walk around the room, picking up things that his wand didn't catch. She replaced each item in its rightful place with love, it was set just right, just the way he liked it. When he spoke to her, she turned around to face him, digging the heel of her shoe into the carpet.
"We were friends since we were petit garçons et filles. I've seen you become much more angry than that. There was that one time when that boy pushed me into the lake that one summer with all my clothes on, you were not too happy with him and you were only ten." Her eyes sparkled at the memory replaying in her head. It was times like this when she truly remembered falling in love with Dominic. Their friendship had meant everything to her, her love for him would protect him always. Onyx would lay her life on the line for the man in front of her, even if he hated her.
"I never leave on time, M'sieur. You of all people should know that. Besides, I had a date three hours ago. Poor garçon, I suppose I should have contacted him some way to let him know I would be late." She ran her fingers through her blonde locks at she thought about the man waiting for her at the Dragon. Onyx hadn't meant to stand him up, she was just trying to make sure that Dominic was okay under all off the pressure.
Why had Onyx been about to go on a date? Because she was trying to forget about Dominic and how he made her feel. The blonde shrugged off her brown cardigan, revealing the strapless white top that she had hidden beneath. She draped the fabric over a chair and continued to pick up and fix stray things here and there. "I wanted to make sure you were okay, M'sieur."

Dom frowned as Onyx brought up a long gone memory. He remembered it vaguely. It had just been his instant reaction to yell and punch the boy in the face. It had been wrong and he'd gotten in trouble for causing the boy injury. He hadn't regretted it though because as kids he had always protected Onyx. He remember her mother once telling him, something he never told her, that she was special and some people might try and harm her for it. At the time he hadn't understood, of course now he knew that she had meant the veela in her. He had taken on the role as protector.
He had never thought when he was ten that he would grow to become like this with Onyx. He looked at her as if from a different body entirely. He was now the one causing her pain. He knew that, he could see it every day because he didn't act like he cared anymore. It was for the best, for both of them. Maybe she would find another man, go and fall in love with him and live her life while he dedicated his to protecting the magical and muggle folk of the world. He didn't believe there was space for her to fit in and he was definitely going to allow any harm to come to her because she was in a relationship with him,
"I remember." He said quietly.
He turned away at her next comment, pretending to be looking through a pile of papers with his back to her. She had a date. That was good, that was what he wanted right? So why had she missed it? He was sure the man would be beating himself up trying to think of why the beautiful woman hadn't turned up for their dinner. He turned back when he was sure that he had his composure.
"You shouldn't let work get in the way of your personal life. Especially when there is nothing urgent here for you to do. I expect the man is feeling horrible." He said.
He couldn't believe that he was acting this way, as if he had only ever known Onyx as his co-worker and that was all. He didn't know how he was managing to act as though they didn't have years of history. He was being almost robotic. He was being polite and professional, just like the Minister should be. He had been spending too much time around others to remember how to act around friends. He wasn't sure he could call her that anymore, his friend. He watched, slightly surprised as she took off her cardigan and walked around the room, bending over. He averted his eyes because he should be looking at her the way he was.
"Of course I'm okay Onyx. There's no need to worry about me. I'm fine. I just lost my temper that was all." He said though he wasn't sure how convincing he sounded. It was too late and he had been awake too long for him to be able to lie convincingly. And truthfully, he didn't feel it necessary too. Onyx wouldn't believe him either wat.

When he spoke of how the man must feel, Onyx felt guilt flow through her veins. She really should have sent the poor soul some message as to why she hadn't arrived. But it was the fact that Dominic was encouraging her to see other people that stung her. "I know, and I feel terrible. But...is that really what you want? For me to see other people? I still think about that kiss, M'sieur. And it still puzzles me to this day, it creates thoughts that can't be true."
As Onyx picked up the stray items, she watched him from the corner of his eye. It was an amazing thing, how he could just stand there and he took her breath away. Once she picked up the final thing and placed it neatly in its place, she mulled his words around in her head for awhile. No. He wasn't alright, she wasn't going to fall for this again.
The blonde crossed her arms and walked toward him. "M'sieur, no offense, but I have known you for years. I know when you're alright and when you're not." Her facial expression softened and she reached up, gently caressing his face before cupping his cheeks. "Speak to me, s'il vous-plait. I want to help you, just like I always have. We've always found a way, haven't we? M'sieur, you're hiding from me. I don't want to play this game of hide-and-go-seek anymore, I want to talk to you. Please,"

Dominic felt proper, formal and extremely business-like as he stood by Onyx, watching her pick up the mess. It seemed his anger and caused a few other things to fall by accident. He didn't feel like he use to. He didn't feel relaxed an calm and like himself. She didn't bring those out in him anymore. She reminded him that he had a job to do and nothing could get in the way. When he looked at her he saw Kingsley's body and the anger Donovan had at him. They were fine now of course after creating the Genesis and discussing many other important matters but he still felt the sting of his words as he blamed Kingsley's death on him. He would never forget that it was his fault the Minister was dead.
He turned to look at her sharply as Onyx brought up something he hadn't thought she would ever have the courage to bring up. He kept his expression professional as he let her finish speaking, surprised she'd go so far to bring up their kiss. He looked away at that point, keeping the same expression. She was lusting after something she couldn't have. She loved him, he knew that. He couldn't let himself or anyone else think that he returned those feelings. He would not get caught up with her. Not in this time of danger when the world needed him. It was also too risky now than it had been before for her to be romantically involved with him.
"They aren't true Onyx. Your personal life is your own. What I want or don't want has nothing to do with it." He said with a straight voice, no hint of a lie. He hadn't been bothered lying properly before but now she was treading on dangerous ground and years and years of being a spy was not for nothing. He could lie to someone if he really wanted to, even Onyx.
Then suddenly she was done picking thing sup and was standing right in front of him. Her hand reached up and touched him and he tensed, not comfortable with the situation at all. His eyes flickered to the door which was open though he knew there was no-one in the office at this time. Only the aurors on night watch and people in other departments. Not here. Her words were heart felt but they were pushing him away more than she thought. She thought she could plead with him but every word that came out of her mouth only made recoil more. When she was done he gently took her hands off his face and placed them by her side before stepping back.
"Onyx I appreciate the concern but our relationship has changed. I am fine, I assure you. I'm not playing a game. Our relationship is professional and I intend to keep it that way. You should be out on your date, not in my office at this hour in the morning. I don't want people getting the wrong impression." He said as he walked around and picked up her coat off the back of the chair before extending it in his hand to her, an obvious dismissal. He knew it would hurt her but at this moment he couldn't be this close to her. He just couldn't do.

When he took her hands off of him, she felt her lip quiver and she quickly looked away from him. Although, it was his words that cut deep into her and it was quite literally a physical pain. She fought the urge to grab her chest when she felt her heart breaking and her eyes became glassy with unshed tears. "Is that right? All those years of friendship are gone? Just like that? You don't care?"
When he handed her the cardigan, a tear rolled down her cheek and she bit down on her lip. This was it, he was sending her away. She was nothing to him now, simply a secretary. Hell, Onyx wasn't sure if she ever mattered Dominic. She shrugged into her cardigan and buttoned it up before re-doing the belt on her waist. "Right. The wrong impression." She whispered, "It's funny. How you're the Minister and suddenly you don't give a damn about anyone else anymore. Especially one who used to be your best friend."
She turned from him and started toward the open door before she paused, more tears falling down her face. "I'm sorry that I've become one of those girls who fell for your stupid charm. I hope I die in the next attack, because it would feel a whole lot better than this. Not that you would care anyway, n'est pas?"
Onyx took a deep breath and walked out of the office. She was so stupid for thinking they would have made up when she went to see him. That was all she wanted, her best friend back. Onyx wasn't asking him to take her then and there on his desk. She didn't think she was asking for much. With a flick of her wand, she dimmed all the lights in the hallway as she left the building. A pained sound escaped her throat and she whimpered to herself. She refused to break down when he was so near, when he was within hearing distance.
She found a slit in the wall big enough for her to hide in and she slipped in between the pillars. Onyx slid to the ground and hugged her knees to her chest before she began to cry, letting every bottled emotion she had toward Dominic out. Her cries echoed through the empty hall and she could barely hear the footsteps getting closer. She pressed her hand against her mouth and squeezed her eyes shut, hoping that she wouldn't be found in her little corner.

Dominic could see Onyx's eyes go glassy and see the quiver of her lip and he sighed. He had known that his words were hurt but he wasn't sure he could stand there and watch her cry. Her words were stabbing but he didn't react. He wanted to say no, he did. He just knew that he couldn't be friends with her, not knowing that she was in love with him. He didn't trust himself and he wasn't going to let there be any chance that he could fail in his resolve to have nothing but a professional relationship with her. He kept a straight face as he watched a tear roll down her cheek when he offered her her coat.
He stood back and watched as she put it on before she turned to ash out at him. He stood there and took it, almost finding it amusing that she thought he didn't care about anyone. It was a very selfish thing to say on her behalf because she was only thinking about herself. He wasn't doing this for himself, he wasn't doing this to spite Onyx, he was doing this for the bigger picture. One day she may understand that but for now he could only watch as her love diminished and her hate grew.
She started to leave though of course she couldn't leave without having one last final world. She was childish like that. He looked at her with an exhausted expression, waiting for her hurtful words to finish. It was what she did when she argued, she always had. She tried to hurt him or make him come crawling back. He had grown immune. He knew she didn't mean it. She didn't want to die and she knew he would care if she died. She just wanted him to cave and say it. He let her walk away, staying silent. He watched her just go, dimming the lights and leaving.
He walked to the door, going to close it when he noticed her bag sitting on the desk, so much for a big exit. He walked forward and picked it up and started following her. Soon they were in a rather big hall and he could hear her cries, letting him know she was somewhere in the room. He walked in, his footsteps quiet until she obviously heard them an stopped. He stood in the hall, knowing she could probably see him. He held u[ her bag before placing it on the ground in front of him before deciding he should say something.
"This has nothing to do with your Onyx. This has nothing to do with me. You know I care, I always have and I always will but right now you aren't on my list of priorities. There is a war about to start and if you hadn't noticed, I'm the new Minister of Magic. I have responsibilities and jobs and a lot of pressure on me and I don't need any distractions. I'm sorry that this hurts you but it's for the best. Goodbye." He said before turning to walk back to his office. He knew she would probably once again get up and scream at him but he was going to just walk away. If worst came to worst he would transfer her to a different department.
