It was just him and his piano as he sat on the stage. A single spotlight on him as the rest of the bar was dimmed. It was near the end of his set, which meant Spencer would hit up the bars and drunkenly stumble his way home. It was only on the stage that he felt truly alive, truly happy. It was only when his voice left his lips in euphony did he pretend that his world hadnt fallen around him.
His fingers danced on the ivory keys as they played notes he had already memorized in his head. His words came from his aching chest as he sang, sang for all he had lost. "How can I just let you walk away? Just let you leave without a trace? When I'm standing taking every breath, with you. Oooohhh, you're the only one who really knew me, at all."
The room was filled with silence besides his voice and the musical of the piano as he sang. He had dedicated this song to Rosie quite some time ago, but he had never been able to sing with without crying. Even now, it was a struggle to get the words from his head and to his mouth. There was a slight tremble in his fingers but he made sure to not miss a single note.
Rosie. She had left him again, just when he needed her the most. He had been injured, he had hurt all over, he had just been thrust into a world of hell and she had left him. Because she feared that he hated her. This was all Spencer's fault. It was always his fault. Couldn't he not fuck up for once? Couldn't he protect his and Rosie's relationship just once? "How can you just walk away from me, when all I can do is watch you leave? Cause we shared the laughter and the pain, and even shared the tears. You're the only one who really knew me at all."
Spencer was afraid. He was so afraid. The scars on his chest and back reminded him how close to death he was and the monster he had now become. For weeks he had contemplated suicide. Why live shunned in the world? Why live in this hell when there was no one there to help him? He had fallen farther into his drinking as he contemplated death and his future. It was a surprise his liver hadn't failed yet. And as he fell into the chorus, all of his agony, longing and sorrow for his sister filled each word. As they left his lips, the emotion was so raw it could have quite literally pierced a heart. "So take a look at me now. There's just an empty space. There's nothing left here to remind me, just the memory of your face. So take a look at me now, cause there's just an empty space.
And you coming back to me is against the odds and that's what I've got to face."[/i]
He hurt so much. He hurt everywhere. Emotionally, mentally, physically. Spencer missed his sister, he yearned for her comfort, to protect her. A lump formed in his throat and tears welled up in his eyes as he continued to play on the piano. His fingers moved flawlessly although he was forcing the words through now more than ever. "I wish I could just make you turn around. Turn around and see me cry. There's so much I need to say to you, so many reasons why. You're the only one who really knew me at all."
His song was nearing its end and he knew he needed to pull through. He needed to end strong. His song was a plea for Rosie to come home to him, a cry out for help to anyone. Someone to stop him from falling off the edge. He was clinging to the side of the cliff and his grasp was slipping, he would fall and then all would be lost. Spencer needed help, he needed support, comfort, he needed love. "So take a look at me now. Well there's just an empty space. There's nothing left here to remind me, just the memory of your face. So take a look at me now, so there's just an empty space. But to wait for you is all I can do, and that's what I've got to face."[/i]
He had made a vow when he stole her away from their parents. He would always love her and take care of her. Spencer loved Rosie so much, he prayed that she knew that. The notes were becoming slower, signaling the final end of the song as his words finally began to trail away. "Take a good look at me now, cause I'll still be standing here. And you coming back to me is against all odds, and that's a chance I've got to take. Take a look at me now..."
God. Please help me. Please find me help. The room was silent again as the impact of his song was taken in by the diners and the bar-goers. The spotlight faded on him and he took this as his que to leave the stage. The light began to brighten in the room until it was once more the usual dimness. Spencer accepted compliments as he went to the bar. It wasn't long until he had spent his brand-new paycheck for tonight on all his liquor and he kept going. Spencer wanted a buzz, to be drunk, something, anything. Whether he wanted to feel or to be numb he didn't know. But he wanted to get drunk, to take some broad home to her house, give her the time of her life and then return to his shabby apartment. That was all Spencer ever wanted to do anymore.
